Correspondence with Richard H. Hill, Director, The Filson Club, dated 5 February 1965, responding to Hill's request that a covered bridge across Blaine Creek near Yatesville (Lawrence County, Ky.) be preserved; a 3 February 1965 letter to Hill noting that the state is happy to loan Paul Sawyier paintings for an exhibit at the J.B. Speed Art Museum; a 23 February 1965 letter to Hill declining an invitation to attend The Filson Club's March meeting; and a 9 June 1967 note to Curtis Craig thanking him for his letter and enclosures on Kentucky's 175th Anniversary Celebration.

Construction on the original building was completed in 1927. An example of the neoclassic style of architecture, it cost $800,000 to build and equip. It was enlarged in 1954 with funds bequeathed by Dr. Preston Pope Satterwhite. In 1973, a contemporary art wing was added, containing an expanded library, an auditorium, and art galleries. Edward Thompson Breathitt was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky on November 26, 1924 to Edward T. and Mary Jo (Wallace) Breathitt. He enlisted in the Army Air Force and served from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. Mr. Breathitt graduated with a bachelor's degree in commerce in 1948 and a law degree in 1950.
